The Brother MFC-8460N / 8860DN / 8870DW fax machines are just the same as an analogue telephone like you would have at home. This means that they will connect to a standard BT telephone line or any other analogue line you may have.
Also if you want to connect the Brother MFC-8460N / 8860DN / 8870DW into a telephone system they will connect as long as it is to an analogue extension. It will not work on an extension designed for a specific type of system telephone.
