Clever Cost Cutting From Canon

Canon is reporting that small and medium sized business can make significant cost savings by better controlling the use of colour printing. Of course that claim has its own commercial imperative given the launch of three new Canon mono multifunctional printers with smart colour capabilities, but it’s nonetheless hard to deny the underlying logic.

Everything’s not black and white at Canon

Indeed when it comes to the machines themselves, that logic is crystal clear. The new Canon iR3180C/Ci, Canon iR5880C/Ci and Canon iR6880C/Ci are specifically designed for users who primary need is for black and white print, but sometimes need a splash of colour. Specifically targeted at small and medium companies (SMEs) and workgroups in larger organisations, the models provide both flexibility and control and can be embedded in an existing printer network, allowing IT managers to set permissions and manage costs through a compatible access management system. The printers even automatically detect whether a page or document incorporates colour and prints accordingly, meaning colour costs are only incurred when necessary. Clever eh?

Meeting you halfway

The models provide a great bridge between the restrictive nature of purely mono machines and the cost implications of dedicated colour alternatives. Print speeds vary from the lower-priced Canon iR3180C/Ci’s 31ppm black and white and 7ppm colour capabilities, up to a racy 68pppm mono pace for the Canon iR6880C/Ci which, along with the Canon iR5880C/Ci can pump out 16 colour pppm.

A private function

The mono/colour option is not the only selling point by any. Data security has been top of the news agenda lately so users my be reassured that they can encrypt or delete via a printer’s own hard drive with the devices being Common Criteria Certified signifying compliance with the international security standard. And, of course, let’s not forget these machines are much more than printers, offering desktop fed scanning options and internal finishing which allows creation of double side, stapled and hole punched documents and booklets.
